Fabrikaffiti

Fabrikaffiti was the first regular urban art festival in Tbilisi and took place from 2016 onwards around the creative hub and club Fabrika in the Chugureti district. The venue was a former Soviet sewing factory that had been converted into a creative meeting space with hostels, studios, bars, and workshops.

Local and international artists painted the façades and walls of the site and nearby buildings every year. Through these creative projects, the entire neighborhood developed into one of the most popular creative districts in Tbilisi. The festival offered young people the opportunity to engage in artistic work outside of illegality, experiment with new ideas, connect with experienced graffiti artists, and witness the creation of new works live.

The event was organized by the artist collective CRU, known for their guerrilla actions in Tbilisi. “CRU” means “lie” in Georgian and reflects the artists’ motivation to expose social falsehoods. Among the founders are Dr. Love and Miro, regarded as pioneers of the Georgian street art scene. With the CRU Graffiti Shop, they also ran the country’s first store for high-quality spray paint and graffiti equipment.

The shop has since closed, and the festival is currently on hold, but it remains an important chapter in the history of Georgian street art.

Das Fabrikaffiti war das erste regelmäßige Urban Art Festival in Tbilissi und fand seit 2016 rund um den Szeneclub Fabrika im Chugureti Viertel statt. Austragungsort war eine ehemalige sowjetische Nähfabrik, die zu einem kreativen Begegnungsort mit Hostels, Ateliers, Bars und Werkstätten umgebaut wurde.

Lokale und internationale Künstler gestalteten hier jedes Jahr die Fassaden und Wände des Geländes und benachbarte Gebäude. Durch die kreativen Projekte entwickelte sich das gesamte Viertel zu einem der populärsten Szenestadtteile in Tbilissi.

Das Festival bot jungen Menschen die Möglichkeit, außerhalb der Illegalität künstlerisch aktiv zu werden, Neues auszuprobieren, mit erfahrenen Graffiti Künstlern in Kontakt zu treten oder die Entstehung eines neuen Werks live mitzuerleben.

Veranstalter war die Künstlergruppe CRU, bekannt für ihre Guerilla Aktionen in Tbilissi. "CRU" bedeutet auf Georgisch "Lüge" und unterstreicht die Motivation der Künstler, gesellschaftliche Unwahrheiten sichtbar zu machen. Zu den Gründern gehören Dr. Love und Miro, die als Urväter der georgischen Street Art Szene gelten. Mit dem CRU Graffiti Shop betrieben sie zudem den ersten Laden des Landes für hochwertige Sprühdosen und Graffiti Equipment.

Der Shop musste inzwischen schließen, und auch das Festival ist bis auf Weiteres eingestellt - bleibt aber ein wichtiges Kapitel in der Geschichte der georgischen Street Art.
